Lahore Traffic Police is swiftly populating correctional facilities with young drivers below the legal age.

In compliance with directives from the Interim Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, Lahore Traffic Police has carried out extensive arrests of underage drivers in a series of enforcement actions. The impetus behind this initiative was a tragic road accident in the Defence area last week, claiming the lives of six family members.

Within a span of four days, Lahore Traffic Police successfully apprehended 1,632 underage drivers, initiating legal proceedings against each individual. Simultaneously, the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Lahore issued show cause notices to six sector in-charges, pointing out lapses in enforcement effectiveness during the crackdowns.

The directive from Interim Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, to launch a comprehensive crackdown on underage drivers across the province is a response to a recent tragic incident in Lahore. The incident involved an underage driver causing a fatal accident that resulted in the loss of six lives.

Naqvi stressed the importance of unbiased and rigorous measures against underage drivers, urging the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab, Chief Commissioner of Police (CCPO), and all Regional Police Officers (RPOs) to submit daily reports detailing the actions taken against underage drivers.

Emphasizing the risks associated with underage drivers, which extend not only to themselves but also to others on the road, Naqvi urged parents to abstain from permitting their underage children to drive cars or motorcycles.

It is worth mentioning that the devastating car accident in Lahore’s Defence Phase 7 involved a family returning home from a visit to relatives. The collision occurred near a roundabout, where a car driven by a teenage boy, identified as Afnan Shafqat, deliberately collided with the family’s vehicle, leading to tragic and fatal consequences.
